Colonization

leave a comment »

Colonization is the direct influence of a culture on one that is physically distant. Here is an interpretation of the negative effects of colonization – these two adolescent males are attempting to use Western technology as they have seen Western youth use it. However, because they have never been taught how to use it, they are using the wrong types of technology in wrong ways, thus frustrating and puzzling them.

The Deprived

Pictured is the opposite of The Deprived. The Deprived would be the social group with financial and social limitations that would not allow them to be functional, skilled members of society. This family of four does not belong into this group, because they are clearly able to afford a dinner at a restaurant, and are well-dressed.

The Trapped

leave a comment »

The above picture is a literal and figurative interpretation of “The Trapped.” The Trapped are the social underclass – not quite in poverty, not quite affluent. The girl pictured would fall into this category. As for the literal portion, she looks as if she is trapped outside of this building, as she is on the outside of a chain-locked fence.

Disabling Environment

leave a comment »

Pictures is a gas station with cars parked in it. This is a representation of a disabling environment because most cars in circulation need gas to function. Despite this gas station not having fuel to provide, there are several cars parked there. This disables not just the space of the gas station, but the ability it once had to generate funds.

Brain Drain

leave a comment »

Above is a photograph of an excerpt from a local newspaper, the Miami Herald. It’s an article on the Bright Futures scholarship program that was established in 1996. The program pays off the tuition for students that stay in Florida’s state schools, as long as they have a 3.0 GPA minimum and a high enough SAT/ACT score. This photograph is the opposite of brain drain, for it is the prevention of talented scholars leaving the state of Florida.

In this picture, the two teenage males are engaged in a conversation. The adult male ahead of them is excluded from this conversation. He is excluded from the teenagers’ conversation. The factors of exclusion in this would-be interaction are the man’s age, and the different levels of social hierarchy evident.
